National Political Education Initiative Committee

The National Political Education Initiative Committee's role is to develop, organize, provide and implement civic education opportunities for the sorority and encourage members to participate in the political environment.

What is Civic Engagement?

Civic engagement can be defined as individual and collective actions designed to identify and address issues of public concern. Civic engagement can take many forms, from individual voluntarism to organizational involvement to electoral participation. It can include efforts to directly address an issue, work with others in a community to solve a problem or interact with the institutions of representative democracy. Civic engagement encompasses a range of specific activities such as working in a soup kitchen, serving on a neighborhood association, writing a letter to an elected official or voting. An engaged citizen should have the ability, agency and opportunity to move comfortably among these various types of civic acts.

What is Political Engagement?

Political Education is also known as civic education (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy): It is whenever & however, the opportunity to prepare people of a country, especially the young, to carry out their roles as citizens.

History Of Political Education Initiative (PEI) Committee

Since its inception, Lambda Theta Alpha has believed in social justice and equality. Using our position as leaders on campus and in the community, we strive to continue working towards the enrichment of the disenfranchised – dedicating our time to raising awareness and bringing about reform for access to opportunities and prosperity for all. Our members realize these goals through our National Political Education Initiative (PEI) Committee, which brings awareness to issues affecting marginalized communities and members.

The PEI committee drives the sorority's non-partisan efforts to educate members on the political process. This includes organizing the annual Lambda Hill Days, promoting voter registration, and distributing educational newsletters. Lambda Hill Days has sent sisters from across the U.S. to travel to D.C. to advocate for priority issues our members face such as: Immigration Reform, Women’s Rights, Education Reform, and much more. PEI ensures political education is a key component of the National Convention. Additionally, they support local chapters in hosting workshops, forums, and candidate debates. Through partnerships with organizations like FWD.us, NALEO, Voto Latino, and Rock the Vote, PEI aims to empower members to engage civically and become informed voters at all levels of government.
